Edinburgh Cake Ladies: cakes, cakes and more cakes

Last night I had the immense pleasure of attending the third Edinburgh Cake Ladies event and what a night! For anyone who has ever attended one of my Pudding Parties, it was exactly the same concept (bake a cake, bring it along and help to devour everyone else’s cakes) on a slightly larger scale.

All the cakes

The event, organised by Edinburgh’s queen of cake Hilsters (@mymonkfish), was held at Loudon’s cafe on Fountainbridge, a wonderfully modern, airy cafe which sells a variety of homemade cakes, breads and sandwiches during the day.  With over 20 cakes and bakers in attendance, the wealth of cakes on offer was a delight to both the eyes and the belly! Below are just a few photos of some of the cakes (unfortunately not all of them) before the destruction!

My chequerboard cake. Although you may have to be leaning at a 45 degree angle to play chequers on it, it was still my best attempt so far.
Lucy Smith's (@smithlh) Mondrian cake, an cake-based interpretation of Dutch artist Pieter Mondrian's Compositions
Lizzie Barr's perfect Sachertorte: soft, moist sponge with a lip-smackingly dark chocolate icing
Gwen James's Guinness and chocolate Cake: one of my all-time favourite cakes. Gwen's version did not disappoint!
Susan and Helen's Courgette Cake
Helen Fraser's (@teatours) Carrot Cake
Kirsty's Coffee Battenburg Cake. Unable to fit it in last night, I have a piece of this waiting for me in my kitchen.
Sophia's Blackberry and Clotted Cream Shortcake. It has fruit in it so it must be healthy, right?
Victoria Pitkin's (@21_urbhousewife) Pumpkin Roll with Orange Cream: a more savoury offering between my many slices of sweet, sweet cake.
Sarah Bell's Hummingbird Cake: how cake should be!
Alison's (@edinburghcake) Battenburg which happened to resemble a famous Italian landmark
Helen Muir's (@hmuir) Spiced Chilli Chocolate Cake: simply gorgeous.
Lisa's (@harbourhussy) Diplomat Cake. A feast for the eyes and the mouth!
Emma Watt's Chocolate Whoopie Cake. I got up close and personal with this cake and I can tell you that is was all good!
Katey Lee's (@edin_eats) Walk the Line Cake. I wish I'd taken a picture of the inside of this cake as it was amazing.
Hilsters' (@mymonkfish) Cinnamon Cake with Blackberries: another "healthy" option
Lea Harris's (@bakersbunny) Gateau St Honore: an exquisite example of a cake.
Anne McDonough's (@mrsmagic) Mysterious Orange Cake, featuring a dash of our well-loved Scottish drink.
Claire Nutley's Autumnal Apple and Walnut Cake with Treacle Icing

There were rumours last night that the recipes for all the cakes would be featured on the Edinburgh Cake Ladies blog at some point, so keep your eyes peeled!
